In collaboration with NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) and NHK Technologies, Inc., we planned and produced a futuristic media experience demo titled “Experience! Showa 100 Shopping Street: On-site Report with Kinuta-Lab,” embodying the FutureVision 2030-2040.
This project served as a technical demonstration, synchronizing experimental haptic devices, scent displays, and 3D displays with real-time content. The experience took the form of a location-based reporting program, where visitors explored a “Virtual Showa World”—created to commemorate the year 2025 (the 100th year of the Showa era)—alongside a virtual reporter.
By integrating 3D visuals with scene-linked haptics and scents, we presented general audiences with the potential for “powerful, tangible experiences” and a new form of communication that future broadcasting media will provide.
Key Points
Creation and Validation of “Tangible Presence”
In presenting a vision for future media, we looked beyond a simple technical exhibit. Our primary focus was to validate the depth of immersion and sense of presence achievable in situations that are temporally and physically “non-real.” By targeting the subtle, emotional sensation of “nostalgia,” we explored whether multi-sensory 3D technology could intentionally evoke this feeling, aiming to create a new form of emotional experience through media.
Advanced Integration of Composite Devices
We precisely synchronized haptic and scent displays with 3D stereoscopic visuals. By pursuing a mode of expression where content appears to leap into the physical space and interact directly with the viewer’s world, the design was crafted to facilitate deep understanding that transcends mere information delivery.
Feedback for Research and Development
By providing general audiences with this future viewing experience, we directly gathered their reactions and feedback. The data obtained serves not only as a record of the exhibition but as a vital asset for identifying and generating new R&D elements for next-generation media.
